    Legionellosis Panel Discussion

In June of 2015 ASHRAE, in conjunction with ANSI, approved their long awaited and much anticipated minimum Legionellosis risk management requirements for building water systems.  ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015, Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems, was no sooner published when within a month, a Legionnaire’s disease outbreak in the South Bronx area of New York City, claimed 12 lives and caused over 125 illnesses.  Numerous Legionnaires’ Disease outbreaks have since been reported across the country, in Canada, Europe, and as far away as New Zealand and Australia.

This panel of practitioners brings together individuals with differing backgrounds, experiences, and outlooks concerning this timely topic.  Bring your questions and concerns and be prepared for a lively discussion.

    Tori Burket

Waterborne Disease Epidemiologist & Legionella Coordinator

Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) - Communicable Disease Branch (CDB): In the CDB at CDPHE we coordinate statewide surveillance, prevention, and response of reportable conditions and disease outbreaks in collaboration with local public health and environmental health agencies. As the state Legionella coordinator I specifically oversee and assist in investigations of legionellosis cases and outbreaks in CO. We also assist with providing training and education for statewide partners related to Legionella investigations, risk assessments, and water management plan improvement or implementation. CDPHE believes that many legionellosis cases in our state could have been prevented with better water management practices and targeted education.

    William “Bill” Mele

    Senior Engineer

Chemistry & Industrial Hygiene:  performs occupational and community exposure and risk management assessments for a multitude of chemical, biological, and physical exposures along with the presentation of engineering and administrative contaminant control options.  We have proposed numerous risk management assessments for legionellosis exposures in community and healthcare settings.  C&IH believes that like many others, legionellosis is a preventable risk given the proper design and application of documented risk management principles.

    David Spero

HS Scientific, LLC  Dave Spero is co-founder and managing consultant of HS Scientific and has over 20 years experience in the environmental sciences. He uses his extensive background in microbiology to provide investigative and consulting services for biological and non-biological contaminants present in the environment. He has many years experience working directly with Legionella in the laboratory setting and understands best practices for sampling, isolating, and identifying Legionella species using proven strategies and techniques.

    Brad Steininger, CSP

Evaluate and manage multiple building and maintenance operations with over 2.5 million square feet on a 30 acre urban campus that includes numerous medical specialty centers, historical buildings, an onsite hotel and parking structures.    Recently charged with system wide development and implementation of a Water Management Program that includes monitoring methods for at risk water systems.

MODERATOR:  Robert D. Strode, MS, CIH, FAIHA

Mr. Strode is a certified industrial hygienist (CIH) with over 35 years of laboratory, field, and management experience and is the Technical Director of Industrial Hygiene Services at Chemistry & Industrial Hygiene, Inc.  His areas of expertise include classical industrial hygiene, indoor environmental quality (IEQ), and field and laboratory methods and analyses. He earned his Master of Science in microbiology, providing particular expertise in the fungal/bacterial aspects of his IEQ work.  He is a member of the national American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Biosafety and Environmental Microbiology committee and is currently Past-President of the AIHA Rocky Mountain Section.  He has authored and/or provided publications and presentations in the fields of chemistry, industrial hygiene, exposure assessment, and microbiology.  Mr. Strode is a 2009 AIHA Fellow (FAIHA) Award winner, nominated by industry peers and awarded to less than five percent of the AIHA membership for contributions to the field of industrial hygiene.
