Refrigeration Design Trends - Where are we heading?

This presentation will overview the recent design trends for refrigeration system design, specifically for systems used in ice arenas, commercial refrigeration (supermarkets), and industrial refrigeration. Government regulations, safety requirements, corporate goals (sustainability), and technology developments have all influenced refrigeration engineers and equipment manufactures in recent years to start designing systems and equipment differently from the normal field fabricated “box of parts” traditionally used in these built up systems.  Those drivers and resulting trends will be described with examples, along with a glimpse of what else we may see in the future of refrigeration system design.

Kyle Larson, P.E. based in Denver, Colorado, is the Performance Monitoring Department Manager at VaCom Technologies where he leads the development and manages the associated services of VaCom’s’ refrigeration Performance Monitoring platform.  Since joining VaCom Technologies in 2010, Kyle has completed DOE2.2R whole building energy models of Supermarkets and Industrial facilities as part of new construction or retrofit incentive programs.  In the field, Kyle has expertise installing monitoring equipment and performing energy audits at commercial and industrial refrigeration facilities to identify energy efficiency measures and to support development of cost effective energy retrofit projects.  Kyle has designed and implemented Measurement and Verification (M&V) studies of various new refrigeration technologies.  Kyle is a graduate from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.  His professional memberships include Associate Member of ASHRAE, Member RETA, and Member ASME.  Currently Kyle is a voting member of ASHRAE Technical Committee (TC) 10.2, webmaster for ASHRAE TC 10.7, and has presented on refrigeration topics at past ASHRAE national conferences.  Kyle is a registered Professional Engineer in California.
